about
From the New York Times, dateline DETROIT, June 24, 1962: The Yankees and Tigers battled for exactly seven hours today, a major league record, before Ralph Houk’s Yanks won, 9-7, in twenty-two innings.
With the score 7-7, Jack Reed, a utility outfielder who had entered the game in the thirteenth for defensive purposes, hit his first major league homer. It sailed into the lower left field stand.
In separate news: At Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood, New Jersey, a healthy baby boy was born to Jack and Carol Eagleson of River Edge, NJ.

Jack Reed’s Greatest Day (June 24, 1962)
Summer Sunday afternoon, June 1962
Yanks at Detroit, bats a blazing, 7-3 thru 2
Somewhere in New Jersey, there’s a boy born on that day
Who’ll grow up saying I was born on Jack Reed’s Greatest Day
Back at Detroit, tied at 7 and on to extra frames
Mantle, Maris, Yogi Berra, Yankees famous names
22nd inning, Jack Reed steps up to the plate
Cracks one to the left feld seats—ending their longest game to date
I was born on Jack Reed’s greatest day
I was born on Jack Reed’s greatest day
Jack Reed played for parts of three years and got two series rings
He was never on a baseball card or had another homerun swing
And my love for the Yankees started in 1970
With Murcer Munson Stottlemyre White Clarke and Kenney (Jerry)
My connection goes much deeper than the average Yankees fan
Who usually come to love the pinstripes before the child becomes a man
But my first breath was taken on a day of Yankees pride
When Jack Reed stepped in for Mickey Mantle and gave that ball a ride
I was born on Jack Reed’s greatest day
I was born on Jack Reed’s greatest day

Introspective, homespun folk tunes from John Donne that feel informed by the sugary bleakness of '80s and '90s indie pop. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 1, 2023
